Behind the Barbed Wire

An exhibition of images from the archive of Derby's oldest photographers, W. W. Winter Ltd
This unique collection of glass plate negatives and prints have been reproduced and researched with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The images were taken between 1915 and 1919 at the German Prisoner of War camps at Donington and Kegworth, and show some of the high-profile officer prisoners, alleged in Parliament to enjoy 'champagne lifestyles'.
Research has revealed the politics behind the internment, as well as new information about the men themselves, the camps and their organisation and the attempts made by some to escape.
